Discussion:
Half-Life Generation (HL, CS, Opposing Force and Blue Shift)

Bought this 4 CD set on sale, and before I install it I'd like to ask
if anyone of you know if this will make havoc with my existing
installation of Half-Life (the original patched to latest version) and
the free Counterstrike mod (are OF and BS mods to or full games).

Also heard a rumour that the Blue Shift edition also included updated
graphics for the Half-Life bit, does this install with Blue Shift, or
do I have to install the Half-Life version on the 4 CD set (it's
called "Half-Life, Game of the year edition"). Anyone know?

What is interesting is that I now installed "Opposing Force", and it
found my Half-Life folder, installed, and works OK (it did not install
the Half-Life engine again, only the additional needed stuff I guess).

BUT, when I installed "Blue Shift", it said that it could not detect
either "Half-Life" or "Half-Life: Opposing Force" and that I could
only append "High Definition Pack" to "Blue Shift".

Why does it not see the other games. They are installed in the same
folder, and "Opposing Force" did obvously see my original Half-Life,
as it did not install the "main game motor" from scratch...

Any tips on how to I can get the "High definition pack" installer to
detect "Half-Life" and "Half-Life: Opposing Force" ?

What is even worse than the problems below, is that after installing
"Opposing Force" and "Blue Shift" from the 4 disc pack NON of my
existing Half-Life games work. Neither Half-Life, TFC, Counter Strike
(the mod) starts. Some just exit when I click "new game", some gives
lots of strange error messages. Why is everything messed up :-(

I'm going to spend many hours reinstalling all the games and appliing
all updated (hope I have all the patches on disk/cd). Not very funny!

The bugger about HLG is that you _need_ to follow the installation
guidelines which followed the game
It's a single sheet of paper and looks rather unimportant
Failure to RUAFTFIG gives you a faulty installation, unfortunately

Install the HLG according to the guide - step by step - after this
process you can apply later patches to the game
I thing OF has an update or two and definitely HL does
Latest nonsteam version of HL is 1.1.1.0

Forget the HD package (allthough it looks nice :-)
Many sites has various HD models which has been laying around for ages

When everything is nice and Dandy - don't forget to backup your
installation :-)

The problem is that I allready HAVE HalfLife, CS and TFC installed.
I had to deinstall, reinstall and the setup all settings again :-(
That's a bit stupid. There can't be that many versions (or didn't
I recognize it because it was a NEWER version than expected?????)

What is this new stuff - serveral 100 MB for one patch ?????
And I though the old 80 MB patches were HUGE :-)
Isn't this really a whole new version of HL, TFC and CS

And what will happend to Opposing Force and Blue Shift if I
install this new HUGE patch. Will they work or be crippled?

You could have installed in an alternative folder
Leaving your old installation

You can also save your settings
I can't exactly recall all the names, but you have a bunch of .txt, *.cfg
etc files scattered all over the place

For HL you have a bunch of patches, some inluding extra mods etc
Read the AGHL faq, there's a compiled version with just the needed files

Basically the HL binaries is changed and might render elderly mods useless

They will work
I have HLG myself
(remember backup before adding any patches)

I had to do a clean install when I used the 5 disc Platinum Edition. After I
patched it to 1.1.1.0 some MODS would not work. This Group pointed me to HL
Switcher.

This utility will let you roll HL back to an earlier versions.

Nice touch by Valve... With an old version you can't play
Multiplayer, and with an updated version you can't play their own mods
(I guess the Opposing Force and Blue Shift I bought today will be
f***ed by the 1.1.1.0 patch or the news GIGA HUGE "steam" patch then?)

Anyone know if Opposite Force will survive this new HUGE patch
(do I need to update to keep playing TFC and CS on the net, or
will the servers still support the 1.1.1.0 version in the future)

300 MB is a bit much to download - even with a DSL line...

Ehh I am playing OF with the latest nonsteam patch
Later today I can check whether OF runs under steam, I believe it will
Note! Blue Shift is nonsteam only

Depends what you mean :-)
You need HL 1.1.1.0 to play TFC on won servers
You need HL 1.1.1.0 and CS 1.5 (or retail CS with patch 1.5) on won servers

Steam is a different ballgame
HL is 1.1.2.0 and CS is 1.6

Eventually Won authentication is shut down, but I won't expect this to
happen within the next couple of years

I use "The All-seeing Eye" to connect to games on the net.

Will that only work with 1.1.1.0 / CS1.5 anyway?
Will there still be servers for this (they usually upgrade
the servers for the new versions only quite fast).

What about all other games using this system (Quake, BF1942 etc)?

OK, so this is a whole new system for online-play?
Is that only for Valve games, and only 1.1.2.0 / CS1.6?

Why are they doing that, won't they split the online gamers?

You could speculate your head of
Valve probably has some good reasons (hopefully)
One of'em is to put a strain on cyber cafe's another is easy access to
small
quick patches

Steam is working quite well, and some new additions has found it's way
to HL
But be aware - I am not able to play the Stam version on my old laptop
(ragepro videocard)
Presteam is ok on this card though (some occasionally lag though)

No - ASE works with Steam aswell.. it's reccomended to start Steam
before launching from ASE though.

Quake & BF1942 won't be using Steam :-) All future valve games will
use it, but at the moment games from other companies are using their own
online auth systems (but maybe the time will come when Steam is sturdy
and powerful enough to be used by other game devs... but we're talking a
long time off. i do doubt that existing non-valve games will ever be
moved to steam :)

The main advantages as I see it, are 2 things that were previously a bit
of a loose cannon from valve's point of view - CD Key piracy and
Cheating.. Steam is the first time that valve has been able to
directly control the clientside of their games - which should mean they
have a potentially very powerful anti-cheat tool at their disposal.
Also, the auth system on steam blocks off alot of the tricks that
software pirates were previously able to use (such as CD Key trojans and
WON hacks - Steam client negotiates the connection to the game server
instead of the game itself)
