Can I give my squad any commands? Like, "stay here and chill" so they
can stay out of my way?

There's only one command - point your crosshair somewhere and press "c", and
that's where they'll go. An excellent way to use them (and get them to stay
out of your way) is to constantly shove them ahead of you to clear the way
as cannon fodder.

Go up to a squad member and click c, and it will toggle them between
stay and follow.
