Discussion:
Can't jump high enough in Opposing Force

So I'm finally playing the original half-life and its mission packs.

I'm now playing Opposing Force. There's ammo on the boxes I see
around, but I can't jump on top of them to get the ammo. Worst yet, I
have to jump on this movable platform to get across the sludge, but I
can't jump anywhere near that high.

I'm I doing something wrong? Or is gravity set too high in this
version?

Thanks.

Did you go through training? ....me neither ;)

There is a special jump in the original games that requires you to duck just
as you jump (ctrl-space? - can't remember - you'll have to look it up). Try
that.

I guess you didn't actually play the original if you don't know how to
crouch-jump. You never would have finished it. Back to training, you
n00b.

They're right. It's an unlikely and unnecesarily difficult button combo,
but I got stuck in exactly the same way back in '99. I actually had called
Valve, they told me what I was doing wrong and I said, "nah that's not it,
but thanks anyway" Then I realized I was doing it wrong. I didn't think
you needed that combo for HL, but they did have that ridiculous long-jump.

Assuming this is the aforementioned crouch-jump, it isn't at all difficult, and
you did need it in HL. If you do the HL Hazard Course training, you are taught
to do it fairly early on. You press jump (Space) then a split second later
press crouch (Ctrl). The idea is that you lift your knees to clear taller
objects when jumping.
